  • Blackmagic URSA Viewfinder working on the BM Cinema Camera

Couldn't find this anywhere in the threads so decided to test whether the BM EVF works on my BMCC. Obviously it needs power so I bought a d-tap to 4 pin and ran the camera and viewfinder from a v-mount battery.

Short answer is that it works fine.

Focus peaking and zoom in button work - the only things that didn't are the tally light and the info button which stays on default, so you can just turn it off and use the cameras info display.

I'd also just use the focus peaking of the camera as the EVFs peaking also peaks on the cameras display out.

Apologies for the orientation of the images...

Boom! Thanks very much for posting these photos!

Can the VF's attached right-angle BNC cable reach the BMCC's SDi output without using an additional cable?

On a related note, here's an URSA VF connected to a BMPCC via a Hyperdeck Shuttle used as the SDI-HDMI converter:

Unfortunately it's an inch or two short to reach the sdi out - but it still convinced my to get one (this one was for a universities URSA Major). Looking forward to trying it out on the Pocketcam now, thanks for the link.

          Hi,

So is the viewfinder powered via a 4 pin XLR?

Does the viewfinder have a switchable rec.709 / Lut option when used with the BMCC?

Is there an instruction manual for the viewfinder online?

          Thanks a lot
          Jon

Greg, thanks for posting the pictures. I have the same Viewfactor cage, so it's good to see it with that combination. It looks like if I decided to get the new URSA viewfinder I'd need to get a shorter NATO rail to keep my top handle mounted.

Correct. It's an industry standard connector often used on ENG cameras.

The EVF does BMDFilm to Video conversion. Can be switched on and off in the menu. Also does False colour, B&W, Peaking

No. BM have not yet published a PDF of the manual online.

It is however covered in the latest URSA manual from page 38-41. Manual available here

OK, cool. Thanks for the additional info. Not a biggie since various relatively short right-angle BNC cables (and short male d-tap/p-tap to female 4-pin XLR cables) are available from many sources, including B&H; for example:

Wonder if there's a hardware limitation to the BMCC talking to the EVF? Anyone know?

I only had ten minute play with the setup and five minutes was spent adjusting to EVF to my eyes... that said it's a beautiful piece of kit.

For us BMPCC guys. Anyone think the kinotehnik hd-sdi to HDMI converter would not work over the bmc hyperdeck shuttle 2. The kinotehnik has a dtap cable for power. I'm not seeing how you can externally power the hyperdeck, unless it uses a normal BMCC power plug....

Yes, the Hyperdeck Shuttle uses the same BMCC power plug. That said, Atomos makes a SDI to HDMI converter that has a built in battery and is only slightly larger than the Sony L battery, it uses in addition to the internal battery. If you use a L battery plate for camera, you can place the converter between the battery and plate. I have one, works great.

Just tested Ursa viewfinder on my Red Dragon.

                            Wow.

                            What a fantastic EVF.

                            What works:

Takes higher than 12v in (Ptap was putting out ~15v)
                            23.98p sdi input from dragon
                            Frame guides
                            False color
                            Peaking
                            Focus magnification
                            Focus chart
                            B&W mode

                            What didn't work
                            Film/video gamma conversion
                            Tally (well - I didn't check because I don't use this feature)

Thanks for the detailed report, Dan!

Question 1: When you say the VF's "Film-to-Video" feature didn't work, was it because it's not possible using the VF's menu or buttons to turn it on/off, or rather that it isn't effective (or not effective enough) converting a RED's log-ish image to a Rec.709-ish image?

Question 2: Is the URSA Viewfinder's included mounting bolt 1/4? or 1/3"?
