  • Some more DN

Here are some more DNGs for download.

Throw them into Photoshop, hit "auto" and have your jaw dropped

No, really - it's amazing how the highlights hold up.
I exposed those to 100% zebras, to see how much is really there.

It actually takes a lot of fiddling in Resolve, to get to the same point, what PS does with the "auto" button.

Lovely images Frank. Threw them into ACR and they were a joy to tinker with. It's proving itself to be just as nice to work with as DSLR raw. Thanks for posting them. Forgive my 2.35 crop

    P.S. no auto

      whoa!
Pretty amazed by some of those. They seem outrageously over exposed but it's all there. The most promising stuff yet.
      Thanks Frank

Thanks Frank for sharing! There's a lot in there!

Could you please compare prores and dng encoding, grabbing the same high dynamic range image with the same more or less correct exposure?

It's amazing that the "overexposed" comments keep coming up but it's what I've found to be the best way to get the most DR. It's just that people have an immediate reaction to the default look. It's all about how you choose to expose though.

Frank you mentioned yesterday though you preferred to "starve" the sensor. Do you still feel the same ?

Also Frank, Resolve has auto grade too. The problem is that it doesn't adjust the DNG settings like exposure. You have to get those close first.

Ouch... For sure the indie filming landscape is having a little revolution now and there will be some looser in this battle...
                    Thanks Frank

I think it's probably just because a lot of people aren't used to really what raw is meant to be about.

Raw files are nothing more than the raw ingredients for a stunning image, cookable to perfection.

Now I want bacon and eggs...

They look a bit soft. Could it be the lens? I´ve seen sharper dngs from the camera, for example the train shot in the other thread.

I think a lot of people are confusing LOG with RAW.

Most peoples experince of log is a way to compress more DR into bit depth limited video. DNGs and RAW doesn't work this way.

Sony and Alexa, working on 8 or even 10 bit files use LOG to try to squeeze , more info into a smaller bucket. Now we've got a bigger bucket.

As beautiful as the RAW is, I will still be forced (by my situation) to shoot either ProRes or DNx. Any hints as to how any of this RAW workflow translates to ProRes and DNxHD? Are the same NDAs that are blocking ProRes samples also stopping the posting of DNxHD footage?
