  • Does does an additional IR filter have to be used for the higher f-stops?

They're okay to me up to the 100 without an additional IR filter, I got it for when the NDs are off/to just have on at all times.

      • Ok, here's a down and dirty test of a few filters and then stacking a couple just for sharpness. I'll get around to a better one using the Sigma 18-35 when I get a step up ring and I'm felling under the weather.

        1st: ND8
        2nd:ND16
        3rd:ND32
        4th:ND4+8
        5th:No ND

Best place to look is the little split, dead center of the screen as that's always in focus as we open up. Also have no idea why all the images are different sizes. They are the exact same. Oh well.

        • Thanks Vic,

One area you want to look at when stacking's bokeh, as any inherent traits of the filters will "double-up" so to speak.

Otherwise, stacking looks legal so far.

          • Here's some quick frames from the Pocket - i didn't just test this camera and all that will come soon but realistically after xmas as there's quite abit involved. I thought i would just share these for anyone trying to make a decision now. No colour adjustments made, i did make a few exposure adjustments here and there but what was really interesting is that it seemed like the Tiffens weren't even that accurate in how much "stops" were being reduced.

I will attempt to colour correct all these at a later date and can upload clips later if people want then too, but i apologize that some clips aren't quite as nailed focus wise as others as we were in the blazing sun for 2 hours straight and i was swapping the same lens across multiply cameras and trying to keep everything straight with notes etc. And my poor GF just stood there the whole time taking a beating from the sun!

            This was all shot RAW.

Anyway, hopefully its clear from the images what is what (click for larger) and you can make your own judgements - although i quickly pointed out stuff that surprised me:

            -----

No ND (i think it could do with IR cut !!! ):

Hoya PRONDs (with and without Hoya IR CUT)

            TIFFEN

Tiffen 1.2ND (no built-in IR CUT) 4X4 with Hoya IR CUT -- Better than Tiffen 1.2IRND ??

Tiffen Vari ND at various amounts:

                • Oh gahd the Tiffens LOL

Going to the top of the thread. Major thanks for taking the time, Hook. Can't wait to check out your other tests. =DDD

Edit: Hoya IR Cut's looking like a good addition with or without on the NDs. Glad I picked one of em up. Might have to do a second

                    • Wow I just realized you did a 16+4+Hoya IR Cut -- Seems the stacking and IR Cut completely shuts down IR.

Yeah, even the 16+4 without the IR Cut seems to do better with IR than the 64x WITH IR Cut. Better to stack than use the 64x? Gonna wait to see how it all grades.. what a mission.

                        • I noticed that I liked skin a little more if I let the IR in, but will have to test this out m'self.

                          • Yeah at this point i've really just been looking at how IR affects the black shirt. The background gets a bit blue stacking.. But need to really play with the footage before forming any real opinions.

                            • Ugh, my head hurts!! Well, looks like the damn Hoyas need an IR cut regardless and stacking is a no no. I didn't test them of good as this of course but will see if the same thing happens here. I might as well use the same test area as I did with the Tiffen IRNDS. And in reference to them, these Tiffens have the same green cast. I can see the resolution hit with the Vari Tiffen too. I'm good on that one

Kholi, back to Hoya! JK But if you have an extra cut, I guess I should get it from you.

                              • Just a note on IR: SOME is GOOD, not bad. What I'm seeing in Hook's tests can easily be balanced out, on the other hand it's very commonly known that not enough IR in skin isn't good.

THere's a balance to be had.

I think more importantly, the Hoya IR Cut seems to be valuable when you don't have any of the filters on camera, which are already doing some cutting on their own.
