  • Sigma 18-35mm ART and UMP G2 - Focus Issue

I usually focus manually when shooting professionally but yesterday I used the UMP G2 with the Sigma 18-35mm ART lens to just shoot some home video with my family. I put the lens to AF so I can use the auto focus on the camera handgrip. To my dismay, every time I press the AF button on the camera the focus was very slow, most of the time it goes out of focus and then starts to hunt for focus as I try to find a suitable edge to focus on. You can hear the lens motor going while it's trying to focus. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the AF system of the lens or the camera?

Normal. BM cameras don’t have autofocus, essentially.

It a,so needs a sharp contrasting line to focus on.

Reminds me of the first camera-body autofocus camera - the Minolta 7000 - which still focuses faster with just one center focus point.

I can focus faster using my hands.

It's not really auto focus.... Its push to focus. BM cams do not have continuous auto focus. It has been like this since the very first BM camera.
