  • 50mm Recommendation + Viewfinder App?

    Evening folks!

In the market for a 50mm to compliment my current Sigma 18-35 1.8 w/ Nikon Speedbooster set-up .. Budget is in the £300ish ballmark ..

Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 is the obvious choice, but I'm not sure I can steep that far budget wise. What's the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM like?

Recently shot with the Nikon 50mm 1.4 .. Solid lens, but didn't match up with the 18-35 too well, and a little too soft below f2.0 for my liking .. Read somewhere the Nikon Series E 50mm f/1.8 is a better choice .. this true?

Whilst I'm here .. What would your recommendations be for the go to iOS viewfinder app?

Shoot away with your suggestions ..

    Cheers guys!

I second the Contax C/Y 50mm. I you wanted to save a little you could got the f1.7 instead of the f1.4. It's just as sharp, and slightly smaller.

But even if you got the 50mm f1.4, you could add a Leitax mount & have it de-clicked and still probably be within your budget.

      Here's one on eBay:

Leitax website (simply THE best mount solution):

If you haven't already done so, have a look at this thread at REDUser:

trispembo, OP,is using Nikon mount Speed Booster, not Canon. Your reference to Leitax mounts is for Canon EF mounts, not Nikon F, so this will jot be of any use Martin.

Martin, you can also look at Zeiss ZF 50mm f/1.4, I have one that has been Cone Moded, works very well, and is si liar in IQ to the Contax.
        Cheers

            Well spotted.

I just updated the link (the same one DPStewart added).

Although I have both a Canon and Nikon 50mm.... I am finding them less than a perfect match against the Sigma 18-35mm. I may have to pick up one of these Contax beauties.

              Thanks for the tips fellas.

+1. I forgot what's it called but it also comes with a lens matching app from the same company.

Yes the contax zeiss line seems to match the sigma 18-35 well. (barring the lighting changes in the Vid )

Thanks, I looked at the original link and did not see the Nikon F mount option. I have always liked Contax lenses, used them on a Contax camera of course, until I wore it out. They have a nice color IQ I like. The 85mmf/2.8 was a favorite of mine, will have to see if I can find one to add the Leitax mount to.
                    Cheers

I have the 35 Art and the older 50. They match very well. The 50 is a very nice lens. I think side by side with the 50 Art you can tell which is which, especially the wider open you get - these art lenses are bananas wide open. But as long as you treat the 50 more like a lens should normally be treated (stop down a bit...) I think the 50's look pretty similar. Enough so that I probably won't replace my 50 until I run out of other things to spend money on.

                        Cheers everybody .. Wonderful responses!

Would you recommend taking the Leitax mount w/ the lens to a professional, and letting them do the process, or would you say it's perfectly fine giving a shot myself? I skimmed the mount page quickly, where there's a step by step tutorial on the procedure .. Seems a little fiddly, but doable ..

What's other people's opinions on the Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM? Is the Contax 50mm that superior as a lens to the Sigma, to justify the Leitax procedure etc?

Just so you know, the 50mm f1.7 MM lens will work with the Leitax Nikon mount, the 50mm f1.4 will not. I wouldn't say the CY lens is superior but I've never owned the Sigma so I can't say. What I can say is that the 50mm f1.7 can be had all day in mint condition for under $200. The "Leitax" procedure is only 4 screws. If you're handy it's easy to do yourself, if not pay some guy 50 bucks. Good Luck.

Contrary to the majority of recommendations, I am tempted to go with the Sigma 50mm F 1.4 EX DG HSM .. Need something pretty soon so the hassle free nature of the ready-to-go Sigma compared to Contax/Leitax process is swaying me slightly ..

Anybody understand the reason for a £100 price difference in the following two links, for the same lens? Warranty, I assume?
