  • Pentacon or Helios?

Hello, I've just won a HELIOS-44M 58mm f/2 2/58 PRIME LENS on ebay, but the owner said he has a pentacon auto 50mm 1.8 prime if I want to have that instead as It's faster. I've got roughly till tomorrow to decide...just wondered if you guys had any opinions/used them on dslrs?

    Cheers

I loved the Helios lenses that I had when I used DSLRs. That said I would take the Pentacon if its worth more money. I remember the Hellios 44M cost around $30-50.

I think their both worth about the same. I've looked at the videos of them both online and it seems such a close call...

If you end up with the helios, look into getting a 40-1, or 40-2. It was my favorite lens for a long while.

I have a few of the Helios lenses and I do really like them and paid next to nothing for them. Great build, long focus throw and nice optics. I've a feeling the Pentacom only has six aperture blades...but I would have to look it up.

Just had a look online and yea it has six aperture blades, would this be a problem? I think the Helios has 8 blades

The Helios is a perfect copy of the Zeiss Biotar lens so in essence it's a Carl Zeiss. Superior glass and no brainer here, go for Helios.

I think i'm gonna stick with the Helios then, I think then next purchase is gonna be an old anamorphic lens.

It's not a problem, it relates to the characteristics of the bokeh. The more blades the closer to circular bokeh, although optics and coatings also heavily affect the quality of the bokeh.
