  • February update regarding MFT - will we get one?

We're into February now - do you guys think we'll get any sort of update? I don't hang-out on the official forums much, but has anyone heard anything?

I wonder if we'll see MFT BMCC roll out before NAB 2013...

Someone posted in the shipping thread at BMDforum that they got notice their MFT version is arriving:

The post was so blasť it almost seems like a mistake and they meant to type 'EF'! :P

For the first time in a series of updates, Grant made no promise of a future update in the 1/14 update. We might not get another update from BMD. Sure solved the problem of being consistently l8 with updates, huh?

I dont see how its good news for people like myself, who ordered version 1 of a camera in April - who would see people who either changed their mind and wanted version 2 or didnt even pre-order version 1 - but did so several months later - to get their camera before hundreds of other people.

I'm not sure Blackmagic is looking at them as "version one" and "version two" - I think they are basing it on when people placed their order for the Cinema Camera, regardless of mount.

How can they possibly do that?

When the MFT mount was announced, it was before BMCC knew about the sensor trouble, so they assumed and even said at the time that they expect the EF mount to ship late september. At the exact same time the MFT was to be released at december.

How can you tell people they will still get their camera in the same order when at the time the MFT cameras were due to be released several months later? Clearly the "without penalty" claim at the time pertained to payment and not when you would get your camera.

Furthermore, even if it was based on when people placed their order, regardless of mount - how come it is clearly obvious now when looking at how some resellers are getting cameras for orders made in May/June and others are still waiting for them for orders made in April? Clearly when you ordered is not something BMCC know and or consider - it is all down to when they ship it to each reseller.

In fact, I dont remember BMD specifically saying that people would still get their camera at the same time as if they had stayed with the EF mount. In their official press release it says:
"The new Blackmagic Cinema Camera MFT is expected to ship in December, and will be the same price as the original model. It’s identical in features as they are both the same camera, just with different lens mounts. The price will also be the same at $2,995. We will be working with our dealers to help people change their orders if they want."

I have been trying to find anywhere where it mentions this "without penalty" clause from BMD....

I have to say I told you so. When the MFT was announced I was trying to get people to switch early because I knew BMD would be keen to get a few early ones out. I also said that normal mass production havent begun so the likely hood are when it actually does both EF and MFT will be made. I predicted that those who switched early are likely get theirs sooner depending on were they are in the waiting list. With regard to the "no penalty" commitement and whatever interpretation it appears BMD to some extent are seen as honouring it.

                  I dunno, Tom.

If MFT has gone into production, I'd say it's more of a marketing decision to get it out - I believe, due to fast-wides, immense lens selection, and now the Speed Booster, MFT is the real future of this camera. I'm not saying I agree with the decision to start producing MFT, but I can see why they'd want to get it out there as soon as possible - especially with NAB only three-months away.

Who knows? Maybe production is at full-speed now and EF and MFT are being produced at a 70/30 rate in favour of EF or something. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

I hope they are still pumping out EF over MFT. I ordered April 20th and still no camera or hope. I had considered switching to MFT but after a couple other people in town ordered decided to keep the EF in favor of getting here "faster" and pushing it on projects. Oh well.

                      >.< Some of us ordered really early then switched to MFT. I think they just need to get as many cameras out as possible, bottom line.

It's equally excruciating to wait on MFT as a day zero supporter, EF is okay but MFT is the real deal.

I hope at least a few go out very soon.

If I was running BMD I would cancel EF mount production and offer to change the EF mount to MFT to the few who have recieved theirs free of charge.

When someone did a survey on this website, asking who was going to get the MFT and who was going to get the EF, a huge majority said they would still get the EF mount.

I know that I don't want an MFT mount either.

This is mildly ridiculous. Not everyone needs or wants the MFT mount version, and it's likely an inconvenience for a lot of people. Just for my purposes, it's what really makes the camera sing, or will.

Exactly, so what's wrong with shipping out a few MFT mount cameras? There wont' be nearly as many EFs, and those like myself that've been waiting on pins and pit bulls can get their stuffs. =D

If they shipped one MFT mount for every ten EF mount cameras, where's the harm?

                              Exactly.

And there's a lot of people that switched to MFT that had pre-orders from the very beginning - I think their commitment to this camera and company should be honoured - these people have backed this camera twice, even after suffering the wait for the EF.
