  • Screw-on VariNd and mattebox?

    Hey guys,

    Have a questions:
Is it possible to use and control a VariNd on your lens while having a mattebox in front of it?
I know there are systems like the basecamp polarpro - which i don’t like - and also 138mm varind’s for mattebox - which are quite expensive.
Since I have already a varind for my lenses I’m curious to know if it is possible?

    All the best

It depends. If you have a clamp-on mattebox, I doubt you can unless you stack a few step rings so the mattebox clamp is on the rings and not the vari-nd. Also, some Vari-ND are threadless in the front so that will not work.
With a rod-base matte box, you can put the vari-nd on your lens and then put the donut over it. You might have to set the ND density first before sliding the MB in. It's a pain but that could work.

I like the new clamp-on mattebox from Tilta. It is great for lenses with up to 82mm front diameter. I have pre-ordered it. From B&H, it should be shipping sometime next couple of weeks.

Instead mattebox you can use round screw-on lens hood connected to VariNd.

Not with a clamp on, but if you box is on rails it's no problem, I do it all the time.
Instead of an donut, I use a 3 x folding rubber sunhood. When I turn the sunhood, the vari ND also turns, which gives you a pretty good grip.

That looks interesting. And is it possible to rotate the filter with this one?

Thanks for your answer! Do you have a link to such a sunhood? Which front-diameter should the sunhood have to fit the matte box?
so the sunhood is screwed on to the variND, right?

The front diameter doesn't really matter, as long as it fits your variND you are good. And yes it goes between the ND and the mattebox.

Thanks Frank! But don't I need something like a donut or a nuns knickers to seal everything to the matte box?
