    oh wow thanks for this! just was I was looking for. Now just which one to pick.

    I must say though a lot of them don't look very aesthetic, not that that's the most important part but ya know missing that polish. The one little remote seems like a great package, anyone have one themselves? at 275 dollars I wouldn't be spending lightly.

    I like the idea of the ursa handle along with the breakout box you made but man I wish there was just a simple D pad on something that could activate and navigate the menu. Don't suppose I should hold my breath for a black magic product.

    Any chance that you could also add which products do what and which can be purchased atm?

      I can only add that i have planes to develop a handle with rosette mount and simple PWM REC/STOP button in uncertain future. Probably it will be made with same technology as my expansion box.
      Also user Stelvis have more ambitious planes to develop S.Bus handle with many wheels and buttons. Currently we collaborate and share ideas to speedup things.

        Shijan and I have batted a few ideas back an forth - I really like his build on the expansion box so would probably look at something similar for manufacture, but its likely to be labour intensive by his accounts.

        I think we would all love to be able to control menus from a joystick or Dpad (and I'm planning on having one built in just in case this ever becomes feasible) but there's no method to actually do this right now unless Blackmagic expand what we can access via sbus

          PWM to S.Bus Signal Converters. You can attach few simple on/off PWM buttons and EK2-0907 servo controllers to this converter and then connect to camera with only one S.Bus cable. This is probably simplest S.Bus plug and play DIY solution which don't requires any coding skills. Due multiple signal conversion this setup may produce micro delays in work, but this need to be tested for sure.

            PWM – Pulse Width Modulation

            This is the most common and basic radio control protocol. In the old days when there were only RC fixed wings planes, the receivers were used to control the servos or ESC directly with standard PWM signal, one channel for each servo. Until today the same technology is still being used in many models.

            Multirotors require at least 4 to 5 channels (sometimes even more) and you will see the same numbers of servo leads connected between the receiver and flight controller.

            PWM stands for pulse width modulation. It’s an analog signal where the length of the pulse specifies the servo output or throttle position. The length of the signal pulse normally varies between 1000s and 2000s (micro seconds), with 1000s being the minimum & 2000s the maximum.

            PWM radio receiver is the most common and usually the cheapest option. However due to the messy wiring, hobbyists now prefer PPM or SBUS over PWM.

            PPM – Pulse Position Modulation

            PPM is also known as CPPM or PPMSUM. The advantage of PPM is that only one signal wire is needed for several channels (typically 8 channels max), instead of a number of individual wires. So you should only connect the ground, power and signal cable.

            A PPM signal where basically a series of PWM signals sent one after another on the same wire, but the signal is modulated differently.

            PPM is what they call “analog signal in time domain” (although it can be a bit controversial at times), channels are sent one after another and not at the same time. Therefore it’s not as accurate or jitter free as serial communications, but it’s more widely available and supported by many Flight controllers.


            SBUS (S.BUS, Serial BUS) – By Frsky, Futaba

            SBUS is a type of serial communication protocols, used by Futaba and FrSky. It supports up to 18 channels using only one signal cable.

            SBUS is an inverted UART communication signal. Many flight controllers can read UART input, but cannot accept inverted one (such as the Naze32 Rev5) and an inverted is required. However F3 FC’s and some FC such as Pixhawks has built-in dedicated signal inverter for this purpose.

            PPM (aka CPPM) is an old, analogue signal. SBUS is a newer, digital signal.

            In a nutshell, SBUS has the advantages of

            SBUS is faster than PPM and PWM
            Different Error Handling
            Smoother, better resolution RC inputs
            Delay

            PPM have 27ms of delay (delay is defined by the signal width), and SBUS only have 9ms of delay.

            In Cleanflight/Betaflight, to prevent signal frame glitching, 3-point averaging is used and therefore the signal delay is tripled (by adding 3 past signals and divide it by 3). So the real delay for PPM is 81ms, and for SBUS this is only 27ms.

            About 50ms improvement compared to PPM might not sound like a lot, but it definitely helps! For example for looptime of 1000, each control loop takes 1ms to complete. By going SBUS your quad can react to your stick command 50 control loops earlier. Less delay in RC input will make your quad much more responsive.

            BanniUK commented in my post on Multicopter International, he asked how far can the quad travel in that delay period? Very interesting question!

            Let’s say if your quad was flying at 100Km/hr (62 MPH) which is 27.8m/s, in 50ms of delay, your quad can travel 1.39 meters. That is about 4.5 feet! Wow

            Error Handling

            As mentioned, PPM is analog signal and it more vulnerable to noise, jitter and interference. The flight controller won’t be able to tell if there is an error in the data, because it’s still a valid value (0% to 100%). To prevent that, 3-point moving average is used (taking average of 3 consecutive values). Thus it causes even more delay.

            Digital signal such as SBUS has built-in error checking and correction.

              Is there any sort of right angled expansion port passthroughs? Much like the hdmi one. The sbus from the expansion port seems to stick out quite the bit.

                  Not quite I'm after more of a pass through for the expansion cable, like on the one little remote so it can be plug in parallel to the BMMCC.

                    Just search for "angle vga adapter" or "angle d-sub adapter" on ebay. I used same adapter in early rig setups. It works very well.

                        just so everyone is aware there is also one big potential disadvantage of SBUS vs PWM (beyond it being harder to implement)

                        Sbus sets all channels at once - ie each time you send any sbus signal it will defacto set a value for all connected control channels, even if you maybe didn't want to
                        this affects more the 4 settings that take absolute values (focus, iris, zoom, audio levels) as the 4 switch type settings (iso, WB, SA and rec) effectively ignore the sbus signal unless it does something very specific that will generally always be generated quite deliberately

                        So say you had a focus controller setup over sbus but also wanted to be able to use the lens barrel to tweak focus - this wouldn't work in practise as any time the controller sends a signal - any sbus signal at all even if you hadn't changed the focus control, it would override the focus as well

                        another area it impacts is that those 4 values need initialised to something so everytime you turn the controller on or off you will get a reset to the initial value (though this can be avoided if the controller can remember the last setting in some sort of non volatile memory)

                        quite a few people have commented on the latter behaviour when trying out the sbus library I put up for controlling the camera

                        PWM can actually be more flexible here - since its only one channel per control, you don't need to change any specific channel unless you want to (though your limited to 4 channels of course, where sbus has 8 available - potentially up to 16 if BM ever decide to expand what you can control)

                          in terms of latency and so on the only thing that really separates PWM and SBus performance wise is:

                          1.) accuracy (SBuS is digital and hence values are non ambiguous, whereas PWM relies on an interpretation of precise timing of an analogue signal) - in practise I never noticed too much of a difference here

                          2.) resolution - sbus has theoretically twice the resolution of standard PWM implementations on the arduino or similar processors (which are limited by 10bit on board DACs on their analogue signal outputs) but in practise this is less as the cameras respond to a quite conservative range of values (around 300 to 1800 or so rather than the full rage of 0 to 2047). Again in the real world not a huge difference (this could potentially affect how 'steppy' focus adjustments are for example)

                          while the differences in signal latency might potentially be a thing if you're flying a drone I doubt anyone would notice the difference on a simple camera controller
