  • question for camera holders

Just got our BMCC in, we bought it off a BMCuser in Los Angeles.
First day of playing with it I'm noticing some banding / almost tearing on the LCD present in live view & on playback that comes in the form of a horizontal line through the middle of the display. I haven't been able to dump footage (Ups lost my caddie package :/) to see if it's actually recording into the footage or it's just a display issue. It's very slight but i noticed it right away. Will try to post examples when I get the chance.

Has anyone else experienced this? Frank, mbeck?

Never seen what you are talking about.. can you point another camera (iphone even?) at the screen and record it so we can see what you are seeing?

I've never seen the kind of fault you describe.

Here's a shitty iphone of the problem.

It starts once playback starts, look closely.

Could this be the reason the person was selling the camera?

Essentially I need to rule that out or we're gonna have some problems.

Looking at your clip I'd say it looks like it might be a sensor black balance calibration issue.

Is this shot at iso 1600 ? You'll find if you dial up the ISO and turn on focus peaking it might show up more easily, especially when you shoot something that's not black but nearly black.

I'd suggest a quick thing to try if you're shooting and don't want to return the camera for service would be to do a firmware update. From memory, this might re-set the sensor calibration.

Are you noticing it's there sometimes or is there ALL the time when you power cycle the camera ?

Yes it's most visible at 1600, although I can still see it at 800, it seems to disappear visually at 400.

It's always there at 800/1600 though.

Well I'd say it's a SENSOR issue and most likely it will be on your finished material. When you start the camera up, it loads a kind of calibration map that's customised for each individual sensor. It looks like to me for some reason there is an issue with where the black point is set.

Have you been running the camera all day ? Is it getting super hot ?

Perhaps try re-loading the current firmware and see if that clears it ?

Barely run it at all, it's not getting hot, no.

Reload the 1.0 firmware? Or update (I haven't updated yet).

It won't make any difference, for this issue I don't think. It's more a way of re-setting the camera. I don't know if it will work, but It's the only thing I can think of short of sending it back for a service.

Just updated to 1.1, still seeing the banding. Hoping it's not sticking on the footage but I have to dump to find that out.
