  • "The Stone" - A BMPCC Short Film/Camera Test

So, like most everyone else, I've been wanting patiently for the Pocket Cams to start shipping out. In the meantime, the other day I paid my customary (read: too often) visit to Texas Media Systems, just to check in and see what was new in the TMS world. I knew they had a demo Pocket Cam in the glass case, so I figured I'd take an ogle at it.

And as I'm looking it over, Terry Nixon says, "hey, do you want to go shoot something with it?"

Now normally, I'd say "sure," and I'd grab the camera and go film my dogs, or a 24-hour Austin taco-shack. But this time, I thought I'd do something different.

"How about I come by on Friday, and pick it up for a weekend shoot?" I said.

"Sounds like a plan," Terry replied.

That's how this all started. On Tuesday morning, I had no idea I would be shooting a short film on Sunday.

I quickly contacted a friend about locations. She ran down a list of possibilities. One of them stuck out.

    A cemetery.

    Done.

Then I put out a call to a few friends, looking for cast and crew. We quickly put together a small crew (of four) and a cast (of two).

And last night, I actually sat down and figured out what we're going to shoot…

It's a horror "micro-short" that I'll also be using as a promo piece for DVXUser's "HorrorFest II" Film Festival.

I'll be updating this thread as I can with notes, pictures, and video clips as much as I can all weekend. When slow internet connections make updating this thread difficult, I'll post updates to the DVXUser Facebook Page. (Link below) If you have a specific question about the Pocket Cam, post it here and/or on the DVXUser Facebook Page, and I'll answer it as quickly as I can.

I think it'll be a fun weekend, and I hope we all learn a bit about how well the camera works, and what it's strengths and limitations are.

    Cheers!

Very cool location. Would love to see it all "Creeped up" for a night shoot.

beautiful Stephen! those frames grabs will debunk the perception the Pocket Cinema Camera image is soft.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but those are scouting photos not shot on the BMPCC. I'll be posting with the PC starting tomorrow.

I can also tell you this…

We'll be shooting with Zeiss S16 Mark II T1.3 prime lenses on the Pocket Cam. Can't wait to see how they look.

After a 10 hour shooting day and a 6 hour drive home, I looked at your first image posted and could have swore I saw dolly movement! Great scout shots!

Just got the cage, 15mm rails setup, and PL mount from Wooden Camera. As soon as I get the Pocket Cam setup on it, I'll snap some pics.

Okay, my first stop today was Texas Media Systems, to pick up the Pocket Cam and a few extras. While I was there, Terry and I set up the cam a couple of ways…

First, with a Canon Cine Prime, some Genus gear, a Chrosziel mattebox, and a Zacuto follow focus…

The TMS guys also put together an Anton Bauer battery cable so we can shoot this weekend without worrying too much about power…

                            And then, well…there was this…

Then, I shuffled over to MP&E/Gear, to pick up the Zeiss S16 lens kit. While I was there, Kirk wanted to check out the witness marks on the lenses and make sure things taped out like they should.

I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with the build quality of the Wooden Cam rig parts, and especially the PL Mount.
