  • Desert Dust storm (Haboob!) killed my shoot, but what a shot!

One of our wicked Arizona desert dust storms, also called a 'Haboob', just ruined my entire day's shoot...

But not before it gave me this wonderful moment.

And about two minutes later my eyeballs took a good sand-blasting.

I prefer to bead-blast mine. I find it a little smoother and less painful.

Are you up near Phoenix then? We don't seem to get them as often as you guys do.

Yup. I'm right smack in the middle of Phoenix.

Shame you wasn't filming the sequel to Mad Max, Fury Road. Coulda saved a fortune on VFX.

          Ironic, right?

One of the most major elements that was completely artificially created in Fury Road - and here I've nearly got it for real.

            Damn! This looks pretty spectacular!

I'd never heard of a "haboob", so i didn't know it was a thing but it seems like it'd make a great setting for a film!

Yeah, the dust storms LOOK really awesome, but they will SHRED you! Anything not weather-sealed is going to take a real thrashing. Not to mention the rest of the gear...AND YOUR FACE!

Maybe one day I'll create a "Haboob Bubble Rig" so I can get serious shoots done from within one.
Not entirely sure if I'm that brave though.....

                    Thanks Steve.
The still is from the BMCC in ProRes. Which still produces stills better than some digital still cameras I've owned..

If only I was rolling RAW on this shoot...

I didn't realize your were in Phoenix as well. Sending you a PM right now.
