Has anyone used an external video recorder like Small HD, Atomos Ninja, or else to shoot Raw with BMPCC?
What is your recommendation?
Thanks

The BMPCC pocket cam doesn't output 12-bit RAW from its HDMI port. It outputs 10-bit 4:2:2 in an uncompressed video stream. It's essentially the exact same quality as the camera's internal ProRes HQ recording.

The reason to use an external recorder is to get longer record times, a choice of codec (such as ProRes HQ or LT, or DNxHD, etc.), audio features, or to record RAW internally in the cam and ProRes externally, etc.

But an external video recorder connected to a BMPCC can't give you better quality than the cam's internal recording.

And yes, many BMPCC shooters use the cam with the Ninja 2. A great combination.

I have a Ninja 2 with my Pocket. I mainly use it for longer times, and getting great audio recorded alongside my video. Peter is right, the BMPCC doesn't output RAW, but what it does output is great for working in post, you just need to set white balance in the camera before you shoot. From my experience, there really isn't a huge advantage to shooting RAW on the Pocket. It might be a little bit sharper, and maybe a smidge more DR, but nothing that I have been able to notice a difference in. I usually record ProRes 422 or LT, I don't even see the need for the internal HQ for most of my work.

i use Ninja 2 with my BMPCC mainly for longer recording time and lower the cost of buying SD card since i can put in a 750GB hd or even 1tb hd instead of 128GB SD card.

As stated you can't record RAW externally. The stream from the HDMI is 4:2:2 10Bit.

SmallHD don't make a recorder. Your options would be:
Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle 2 - ProRes, DNxHD or Uncompressed
Atomos Ninja (v1 or 2) - various ProRes or DNxHD
Atomos Samurai Blade (will need the Connect S2H to convert the HDMI to HDSDI)- various ProRes or DNxHD
Sound Devices PIX 240i - ProRes or DNxHD
AJA Ki Pro Mini - ProRes
Convergent Design Odyssey7
And a few others...

I use the Atomos Ninja 2. Works very well. 10bit ProRes 422 HQ is very robust and great for post production work flow. Even Arri use ProRes in the Alexa.

Would be nice if BM sent Timecode out via HDMI because you could then trigger the Atomos Ninja from the camera.

Did you get it? I'm curious about the usefulness for audio. Any experience with that side of it?
