It all started with the sensational announcement of MoVi. The possibilities with this gyro-stabilzing system are incredible. The technology of the gyro system isn’t a new concept but this new interpretation gives all filmmakers a new instrument to realize their creative ideas. Mindcut blog has created a compilation of all current systems.

I've been searching all over and can't find a link to the original. My steadicam friends all referred me to it when the Movi was annouced. It was $60k and has been out for 10-15 years. Anybody know what I'm thinking of?

Probably you mean the Alien Revolution. A gyro system that holds the camera level in the roll axis. There is a roll cage on the steadicam sled itself and it is possible to turn the rig upside down while the camera remains horizontal. It is possible to construct something similar with the brushless technology and I already plan to build a 2 axis system for the steadicam where the tilt axis is stabilized as well. With the AR the tilt axis is manual and works by inertia which is quite small if the rig is horizontal.
