A very sensitive topic beautifully directed and wonderfully shot. What was this shot on John? And was this mainly natural light? The exteriors are gorgeous. Love the song also

great work and A very sensitive topic indeed, but this work is defeated by our western governments by finally negotiating with the Taliban and making them part of the solution of Afghanistan's future, just get on the net and see what they are doing to women and girls in Afghanistan

Hi.

Thanks for the kind feedback. This clip was pretty special to me. Emma Freeman (http://emmafreemanfilms.com) is a director I love working with and have done a lot of TV drama with, but this was the first time we'd worked on something that was personal for her. The subject is a difficult one to address and she has done it masterfully. She has such a great way of bringing out amazing perfomrnce from her cast. The little girl in the clip, Imogen, only just turned 8 had NEVER acted before. I still find it haunting.

Lighting was indeed mostly natural. Usually though this still means for me using ultrabounce and sometimes negative. So for example, the shots outside the stone cottage of the bride's mother were a 12x12 Ultrabounce on camera right and a 12x12 black / negative on the camera left side. I did have a couple of CREAMSOURCE lamps which I mainly used in the interiors of the same cottage. Again, though as a ultrabounce and from outside the window. In this case a 6x6.

Camera was a RED EPIC mainly because we wanted to have 50-100 FPS and it can also be broken down to a very small size. I have developed an approach with this director that involves me getting those close up details, usually using a 50mm CP macro. So all the close ups of the hair being braided, the gown being fitted, the man rowing closeups etc. By being close and working in macro i can cover a lot of ground very quickly and Emma loves the momentum of this way of working.

We shot over two days and the crew was tiny. A gaffer, a grip, a focus puller and a data wrangler.

Wow! Fantastic work John.

An extremely moving piece done justice by the Directing, DP-ing and amazing performance by Imogen. Great locations too.......just down the road from me!

@rawCAM, this work is definitely NOT defeated. This piece alone will not change what is happening in relation to child brides but helps create an awareness and 'realness' to the issue for many to connect to.
