Okay, since Australia has a totally different time zone, it's already 1st of April there....

Duh!

Don't feel bad, Frank - I've been done in by dry press releases year after year.

After all, if it had come a few weeks earlier, the original BMCC announcement would have been easy to write off as another April Fool's Day prank.

Even if it wasn't an April fools day joke, what recording environment would you want to use something like this for?

One of the giveaways is that you'd never actually want 16 capsules for this kind of thing... the real thing uses far fewer capsules, either enough to cover 5.1, or to create an expanded version of M/S recording.

You'd want it for any kind of environmental recording where the sense of "being there" was important; things like dialogue or individual sound sources still need to be addressed in the traditional way. The idea of being able to lock on to individual sources by selecting specific capsules in a ring like that is hooey; you need to get up close and personal, as you would with a targeted shotgun or lav.

Adding surround audio coverage can genuinely enhance just about any location recording, as long as you don't start cranking it so it fights what you really need to be listening to. Almost any modern movie soundtrack has things going on all the time in the surround channels.

I use plugins from Waves to manipulate source audio and music;

There are also dedicated plugins for creating surround from stereo source material. They can do a fantastic job.

My favorites are the surround environments from Altiverb...

In addition to performance environments, there are also impulse responses useful for putting sounds upstairs, in another room, parking garages, bathrooms, etc. Lots of fun.

Come on. Five blades on a razor was once a joke in Mad Magazine, then Gilette made it a reality.

This RØDE i16 be the dumbest thing ever imagined. But, as history tells us time and time again, dumb is good! Dumb sells!

So come on, Røde. Build this thing. Frank woulda bought one already...
