I'm shooting my senior thesis project for school at the end of March and in one of the scenes my actor needs to smoke a cigarrett in a restaurant. I've tried the fake ones you can buy at party stores...but like I figured, they look like crap haha. My only concern is fire alarms and the smell that really cigarretts leave lingering, I don't wanna worry the owner of the restaurant i'm shooting in. I've thought of using clove cigarretts or possibly just adding in the the smoke effects in post? What are your thoughts. This is a fairly common prop, so i figured i'd make a shout out.

You could always buy those herbal cigarettes for the shoot, which don't leave a lingering smell. They taste like absolute horrible crap, and more than once I've had an actor request an actual cigarette.

The herbal cigarettes I've seen/smelled so far looked very real but smelled horrible.

Try an electronic cigarette with nicotine free vapor. Sweet taste, no smell whatsoever.

I had an actor do a scene with one of those USB rechargeable type of electronic cigarettes. It had a little red light up end and "smoke" was inhaled, and blown out. It looked OK but on a closeup you can obviously tell it was fake. Maybe this guy actually smokes electronic cigarettes?

Here's the film if you want to watch the whole thing, awesome, otherwise you can see the cig starting at about the 2:58 mark.
