I was really getting frustrated with some of the footage being posted. This along with the John Carr footage keeps me interested. Can't wait to see more footage from BMC owners!

The tonality and detail in the footage is just lovely. I've been looking at some 1080p comparison shots on my 50' Plasma today, looking at the F35, Alexa, C300, SLOGged F3 and BMC - and it's just remarkable how good the image quality is from all of them (the BMC especially given its price).

It's a bloody exciting time to be making motion pictures.

It's bloody exciting to be able to afford such an image making tool. I know I should be getting out there and filming things with my 60D to "practice" but frankly, I don't want to!

It is amazing what is affordable now, since to be honest with the exception of the Alexa all of those cameras are affordable. Compare that to even just 5 years ago.

Looks great! This camera has a fairly distinct look, especially in the blue hues. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yep. The detail. It looks like there's more detail in this test video than the professionally produced GH3 video. That's not a slight on Philip Bloom or Bruce Logan; I'm sure they know what they're doing! It's the camera.

Some nice "crisp" images, would like to read some more information about this video :

-DNG or prores?
-Lenses, aperture setting, focal lenght (quite some depth of field)?
-Post processing, sharpening in post, night shots lifted in post?
-workflow?

Even with youtube compression there is plenty of details and minimal artifect. It looks like film and none of the electronic look of the new GH3. If it werent for the 1080p 60fps I would'nt even look at a GH3.

Wow that's too bad, watched it last night and it was a flagship video for the camera. Lots of different shots and environments. And extremely film-ish looking. Great use of exposure to get that thick mid-tone look of film. The dusk shots were very good looking.

But perhaps anyone who had watched with Internet Explorer may check it out on the temporary files folder and re-post it. At least, to those here who didn't see it.

The Asian guy just re-uploaded the video to YouTube a few hours ago. Don't know if it was because I asked him about it but here it is:

Thanks Aaron!
To my eye, the high frequency shots (accordion, foliage, lines in cement, rooftops) all look moire free.
Even the rolling shutter in the propeller wind chime trinket looked ok.
For me that puts some worries about those issues to rest.

The footage did not impress me. The highlights are magenta, the noise in the temple shots in combination with the h264 encoding removes a lot of fine detail. Most of the shots were not tack sharp, i hope that it is because of the optics and perhaps diffraction because of an aperture above f11ish in some of the wide shots. When compared to some hacked gh2 footage and/or GH3 it seems that this camera in prores doesn't impress me at all. Sure raw is amazing, the reason why i order but for daily jobs i need a fast turn around and i hoped the prores would give me good footage, not sure now!

Kind of agree with the above post personally, a lot of the wide stuff looks really muddy and soft - some of it is definitely focus (shot of the rockface being a good example) but there's no bite. Yes moire etc is way above DLSR territory but this doesn't look like any mini-Alexa, or even C300 for that matter. I think it's partly down to optics and grade, but it's not up there with most of the stuff I've seen.

Martin
09-18-2012, 01:07 PM
It all depends in whose hands the tool is in. As a DIT I've seen Alexa and Epic footage that looked like any DSLR would. Worse, if the DOP demands a really aggressive grade: "Crush the blacks. Yes, more. Crush them more. Even more than that. Now can you apply a vignette?" (The image now looks like a bad stencil copied several times over)
I do agree that the whole thing looked very video-ish, much like the video shot in Tokyo posted earlier. It seems to me these were shot by videographers, not by people wanting to be filmmakers. And they serve a purpose, namely pointing out that the potential problem areas are not that bad. For people who have put a chunk of money towards the BMCC package, this must be a relief, at least it is for me, and I thank this person for putting the images up there. We have already seen that in the right hands, this camera can do amazing things.

I know...I feel totally out of touch with these "cinematographers" sometimes. They are in another league.

I'm always really pleased to be able to look at any early footage that anyone's got the balls to put up and I really hope people keep doing it so we can all have a good look. I know what it's like to be one of the first to put up footage from a new camera and wait for the 'I could have shot it better on my 5D' stuff to come rolling in. Until we all do our own tests we're not going to get a real personal handle on the footage and what it can do. I'm looking forward to a couple of months (hopefully) down the line where we're talking about exposure sweet spots and the like as we get to know the gear. For me, my whole opinion on this camera was really formed when I took some of John Brawley's footage into Resolve and started pushing it around. I haven't got that excited since I first used an Alexa.

I look forward to seeing more, keep it coming.

That was my thought also. Loved that railway shot along with the night and low light shots. If this footage looks videoish... sign me up for the video camera that this supposedly emulates! It all boils down to that the BMC is a pretty darn good little camera for the dollar. I love the organic and natural looking colors/saturation of the test footage I've seen so far... and its coming out of a $3K camera...

Youtube usually has really bad compression artifacts, but somehow it doesn't seem to look as bad here - full screen 1080p
